Assignment Overview

Research Purpose: To explore what the promises of our basic freedoms really means. Students will pick a Civil Liberties topic highlighting an aspect of the Bill of Rights about which there is current controversy, and write a persuasive paper that analyzes applicable law and Supreme Court cases surrounding the topic, discussing what should be done in future instances to increase empathy and compassion around this topic in American society.  Additionally, students will present their research using a poster.

Research Requirements:

  • 1 news article from 2022-2025 depicting a current topic- related scenario 
  • 1 federal statute
  • 3 Supreme Court Cases

 Types of sources--

  • may include books, articles, and reference material from the library and library databases
  • websites linked from the LibGuide
  • No general encyclopedias, Wikipedia, or ASK.com

Citations-- 

  • footnotes must be formatted correctly in Chicago/Turabian Notes/Bibliography style
  • all papers must include a Bibliography in Chicago/Turabian style
  • an annotated bibliography is required for Assignment 1
  • all sources and citations must be organized in NoodleTools
