Advanced Search Tips

Two Ways to Use Advanced Google Searching:

1. Combine special operators (see the list below) with your keywords in the regular Google search box.

2. Or, use the Advanced Search Form:

 

Advanced Search Operators

Operator Description Examples

Exact phrase search

Place quote around phrase to find the words in that exact order

"handmaid's tale" "veterans of World War II" "renewable energy"

Includes word(s) in result

Type a plus sign before the word or phrase to include. Include a space before the plus sign , but not after.

Also, use to make sure a stop word is included

"exciton transfer" +temperature

"Nineteen Eighty-Four" +literature

Exclude word(s) in the results

Type a minus sign before the word or phrase to exclude.

A space must be placed before the minus sign but not after it.

Restrict search to a particular domain or website

Searches for a missing word in a phrase search

Synonyms

Searches for a specified keyword and words that are similar to that word.

Adding a plus sign before a word disables synonyms.

Searches for multiple words in the title of the search result.

Begin the query with allintitle: There is no space between allintitle: and the following word.

Searches for multiple words in the url of the search result.

Begin the query with allinurl: There is no space between allinurl: and the following word.

Find Google Educatiion apps

define:

Searches for definitions of words from various web sources.

Use the operator in the form define:and the results are restricted to a list of definitions.

Restrict your search to a specific file type.

There is no space between filetype:and the following word.

Find PDF Federal tax forms:

Find a Power Point on dystopian lit from an education site:

intext:

Searches for a single word or phrase in the body of the search result.

There is no space between intext: and the following word.

intext:"periodic table"
intitle:

Searches for a single word or phrase in the title of the search result.

There is no space between intitle: and the following word.

Find information about the use of robots in the production of Toyota vehicles.

Searches for a single word or phrase in the url of the search result.

There is no space between inurl: and the following word.
