Assignment Overview

Research Purpose: To explore a significant event, person, or movement in U.S. history between the years 1865 and 1929 to gain a deeper understanding of the critical developments that shaped the nation during this transformative period. Students will use this research to write a well-structured essay to analyze the historical context and significance of their topic.

Research Requirements:

  • Topics must be selected from the list provided or approved by Mr. Irwin
  • Essays must have 4 full pages of  body text
  • Include footnotes formatted in proper Chicago Turabian style
  • Include a final bibliography in proper Chicago Turabian style

Source Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5, maximum of 6 sources
  • Include at least 1 primary source
  • Use reliable sources-- library databases are recommended
  • All web sites require a Web Site Evaluation Form and teacher approval
  • No general encyclopedias, including online encyclopedias
