Citation Guidelines Grades 4-6: Citing Facts

Citing Facts and Information Grades 4-6

For grades 4 -6, Woodward Academy uses the Modern Language Association (MLA 8) style for citation. When gathering facts and information for a project or report, keep track of the reference sources you use in order to give credit to the original owner of the ideas. For each information source, you will create a citation. At the end of each project, you should make one list of all these citations that is called a bibliography or a works cited.

Woodward Academy provides a subscription to the online research tool called NoodleTools which provides a convenient way to record all of this information in your own web-based account. For detailed instructions on how to set up and use your account, please see: NoodleTools LibGuide.

Whether you use NoodleTools or not, follow the examples below for each type of source, pay close attention to format and punctuation. Record the information as shown in the examples below:

Final Works Cited List

To create a final Works Cited to turn in, do one of the following:

  1. If you entered your citations in NoodleTools, use the Print/Export tool on the Source page to export into Google Docs or Word. For more help, see the WA LibGuide or use the Help menu  under My Account on NoodeTools.

Note: Exporting will automatically format your Works Cited with the requirements below. However, you still need to proofread to correct any spelling errors or capitalization errors. For example, capitalize only the first letter of names or words in titles.

OR

  1. Type a final Works Cited using the following requirements:
  • Begin your Works Cited on a new page by itself.
  • Use Times New Roman font, in black, in size 12.
  • Use one inch margins.
  • Put a proper heading with your name, name of class, and date as directed by your teacher.
  • After the heading, put this title in the center: Works Cited
  • Skip two lines and begin your list at the left margin.
  • For any citations that won’t fit on one line, indent the second line and any others after that, using a .05” hanging indent. (Note: In GoogleDocs, it can be difficult to make a hanging indent. You may have to hit Enter to move the line down, indent .05”, and then delete the extra line.)
  • Each new citation entry should begin on a new line at the left margin.
  • Alphabetize the citation list, using the first word in each citation.
  • Double space all citations, but do not skip a line between entries.

See the sample Works Cited below which uses the example citations and alphabetizes them in a final list with proper formatting.
