Notes about Image Usage

For images from the Internet, be sure to respect copyright law by citing your source.

Citations should be created in the proper style for that particular course. 

(Note: For English use MLA, for History/Social Studies use Turabian, for Science use APA)

 Image citations may be either:

1. an image caption

or

2. in one alphabetical list of all images, titled "Image Sources," at the end of your project

A database of rights-cleared images for projects. Paid for by WA. Off campus login required: Database Passwords

Citation directions: 

1. Click on the desired image

2. Click the "Cite" button with the checkmark in the tool bar below the image.

3.Select Citation Style from the pull down menu.

4. Copy/paste the citation as a caption under the image, or add the citation to an alphabetical list called "Image Sources"  at the end of your project (this list is separate from your Bibliography).

A free media file repository making available public domain and freely-licensed educational media content (images, sound, and video clips) 

Citation directions: 

  1. Go to the solo page for the item that you want to use
  2. Click "Cite this page " under Tools on the left
  3. Select the proper citation style and copy/ paste
  4. Edit as needed

 

Photos for Class

Photos for Class 

Search for Creative Commons licensed images. Files downloaded have automatically generated attribution content afixed to the bottom of the file.

  1. Enter a keyword search
  2. All photos shown are licensed by Creative Commons for public use
  3. Download the image and the citation will download automatically as a caption on the image

Google Image Search

Google Images

  1. Try your image search with keywords (use quotes around phrases)
  2. ​Click "Tools"
  3. Under the "Usage Rights" dropdown menu, select “Creative Commons licenses" 
  4. Google Images does not provide a cite button. Click the visit website button under the image

5. Find as much publishing info as available, including: 

  • Full name of the image’s creator, such as the name of the photographer or illustrator (if available)
  • Formal title of the image (if available) or a description of the image
  • Name of the website where the image lives (Do not use Google as the name of the website!)
  • Publisher of the website where the image was found 
  • Date this information was published on their site
  • Accessed date
  • The URL from the address bar
